Interesting Facts About Texas Hill County

By Pammy McGrath

Hundreds of thousands of travelers visit Texas Hill Country each year, and it is easy to understand why they make this trek. The region, which includes about 25 Texas counties, offers spectacular scenery, quaint historic towns and much to see and do. If you are planning a trip or a move to Texas Hill Country, here are a few facts to know.

The geography of Texas Hill Country is quite unique and there is just no other place in Texas quite like it. The region is a large, hilly plateau marked with several prominent granite domes, such as Enchanted Rock, which is a popular tourist attraction. The rock is located in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and visitors can camp, hike, rock climb or just enjoy a picnic. The area features an abundance of interesting flora and fauna, as well.

In addition to the hills and rocks, there's a lot going on underground and you can visit a number of caverns throughout Texas Hill Country. One cavern, the Cave Without a Name in Boerne, has been named a National Natural Landmark. Inner Space Cavern, which is located near Georgetown and Natural Bridge Caverns are both open for tours and definitely worth a visit.

There are more than 50 lavender farms in Texas and many of them are located in Texas Hill Country. The Texas Lavender Association headquarters is located in the Hill Country town of Johnson City. There are two annual lavender festivals in this region, as well, including the Blanco Lavender Festival and the Becker Vineyards Lavender Fest. Both events include a variety of activities and vendors selling lavender and many products made from lavender.

Grapes also grow well in Texas Hill Country, and this region is quite well known for producing excellent vintages. There are more than 35 different wineries in the region and many offer wine tastings and tours. Texas is, in fact, the first place in the United States where grapes were grown to make wine. While you might think California started it all, Franciscan monks started up the Texas wine industry long before the first vines were planted in California.
