Get More Value With Your Vehicle With Extended Service Plans

By Marissa Velazquez

The agreements created when extended service plans are created will ultimately save the owners thousands of dollars in repair costs. The agreement could define exactly what parts of the car are covered under the contracted protection, and define the length of time that the protection which is in force. If the contract extends to a certain dollar point, then only that amount can be valid and other costs will be the responsibility of the owner.

Not all service contracts that buyers accept on the date of purchase will be valid on the date of purchase. Some items will also qualify for a warranty plan that is offered by the manufacturer for a specific period and that period. That coverage period will typically begin after the first year of ownership has been completed.

The person sponsoring the extension of service is likely to be the dealership that sold the car. The maintenance records will be maintained at that location, but repairs can be completed by any certified mechanic. To entice more buyers, some dealerships will include service bonuses as part of a sales package, such as free maintenance checks, oil changes, and tire rotations.

These options and others are offered to the buyer at time of purchase. If the auto is sold as new, the type of coverage offered at this time will include protective coverage that covers the entire automobile, where coverage stretches to cover everything between both bumpers. Should cost be an issue, the buyer is free to adjust coverage limits so that the final cost is equal to the amount that is financed by a lender.

If the automobile is sold by a dealership that maintains an inventory of hundreds of automobiles, the chance for dealership being eligible to grant discounted rates on this types of protection plan is immense. The dealership can choose to pass certain savings on to the buyer or not. The sales person can use these discounted rates as a tool for making the vehicle more desirable to the buyer on that day.

Every buyer should be able to identify the cost of such maintenance and repair plans because the costs are listed separately on the sales contract. Every item that is protected under these repair agreements will be identified, as well as those items that will not be covered. Perhaps the dealership can offer other plans that will protect those items and another contract can be drawn up.

Certain benefits are only effective for a certain time period. The warranty can state that the contract covers wear incurred during certain mileage readings that are shown on the odometer. When warranties of this type are offered, it is understood that the price of the auto is a separate matter. The auto price can be lowered through careful negotiations with the sales person.

Many buyers will select extended service plans to limit repair costs in the future. Some gadgets and modules are expensive to replace and having that protection in place from the date of purchase will give buyers confidence to make a deal. Various types of coverage can be considered before and after the sale.
