Why There Is Need For Deregulation Of Utilities

By Margaret Snyder

Monopoly of companies has played a vital role in restricting customers to seek services from only one company. The most common of these services is electric supply. In the event that government policies are restructured, customers will be at full benefit of deregulation of utilities especially in power supply. This means that, the utility may still own the entire infrastructure, but other electricity providers may still be able to buy and sell electricity to the customer directly.

Being that the market scene in Florida has been deregulated, a lot of benefits are being realized here. To start with, deregulation has enabled a leveled field for competition to be created. This has been realized in sense that companies are accorded an equal opportunity for scrambling for customers. Consumers are now the ones having the final say when choosing the kind of service provider they want.

The freedom given to clients to select their service provides has seen prices of electricity falling at a higher rate. Competition is healthy for any business environment and it requires effective and creative ways of luring customers. Companies have thereby resorted to lowering their prices and in the long run, the consumers are the ones who benefit. This has been considered as the biggest relevance of deregulation.

The low electricity cost also has an impact on the prices of goods for commercial businesses. Electricity usually represents a large portion of business operation cost. Such costs are passed down to the cost of goods sold to consumers. With deregulation, such entities can be able to shop for good electricity bargains which will lead to lower operation costs. By so doing, the prices of goods being sold also come down hence benefiting the consumer more.

When it comes to the environment, deregulation also comes in handy in conserving it. This move will push companies to go the extra mile of pleasing their consumers so as to gain loyalty. In this regard, some will come up with power production techniques which are friendly to the environment. The instances of pollution are hence, set to be scaled down in the long run.

When it comes to customer service, companies will also be subjected to ensuring that they provide quality customer care. Customer service acts as the face of any company hence the need for making it look exemplary. Businesses will good customer care can attest to the growth in capacity of client seeking their services.

There will also be an increase in the number of job opportunities. Monopolistic companies do not want other players to join the market hence strive in pushing for regulation. However, deregulation has opened doors for other service providers to set up businesses hence giving the locals a chance to be employed in the new firms.

Nevertheless, it becomes important for other states to take up this initiative to protect the citizens against exploitation by individual companies. Power supply is critical in the survival of a business hence the need to make it more affordable. Affordability will only be guaranteed by the entry of new players which will only be guaranteed through deregulation.
